Frequently Asked Questions
Pad printing is the process of transferring an image from an etched printing plate (cliche) onto a product using silicone pads. What makes the printing process stand out from other forms of printing is the fact it is capable of printing images onto virtually any shape regardless how irregular it is. The unique properties of the silicone pad enable it to pick the image up from a flat plane and transfer it to a variety of surfaces, such as flat, cylindrical, spherical, compound angles, textures, concave, or convex surfaces.
Pad printing offers better definition and higher resolution than most other printing techniques. The pad printing process is unique as it also allows you to print on different surface structures, like uneven or textured surfaces.
Most materials and substrates can be printed, however the object to be printed needs to have a higher surface energy than the pad. This rules out printing on soft touch rubber and other non-stick materials, as well as wet, greasy surfaces. Additionally, some types of plastics and metals require pre-treatment to help the ink adhere to the product. Metal and silicone surfaces can be printed but the level of ink adhesion does vary and is not guaranteed as permanent.
Pad printing is limited to relatively small images compared to screen printing. We use various different sized pads which can achieve a print area up to 100mm x 100mm subject to sight of the artwork and product.
Pad printing produces a finished ink film thickness of approximately .00025″ to .0003″ with a single pass. By screen printing standards this is very thin, however it does enable you to reproduce highly detailed images that you may not be able to achieve through standard screen printing. Achieving light colours on a dark background is sometimes difficult with a single pass and will often require a double hit. Large open areas of solid colour can also be difficult to reproduce.
We can pad print multi coloured images subject to sight of the artwork and product. Our multi colour pad printing machines can print up to 4 colours simultaneously without the need for intermediate drying.
